Why Are Some Resilient and Others Not?

Good Morning!  I hope you are all having a wonderful Monday  :)

So I saw "Seeds Of Resiliency" last night.  It was moving - sad and happy; devastating and hopeful all at the same time.  This movie wonderfully exhibits how powerful our spirit, our hope, and our perception can be.

Although the movie left me feeling extremely hopeful and powerful it also left me feeling overwhelmed.  For a moment I was a bit consumed with thoughts of those who can't be resilient, those who are swallowed up by despair.  I thought about the perpetrators, those who thrive on the suffering of others or those who are not able to even recognize the suffering of others because they are blinded by their own selfish ways.  How can there be such a dichotomy?

Then it hit me early this morning - Both have to exist.  Great resiliency can only come out of great hardship.  That is the the definition.  Inherent within resiliency is adversity.  It is not easy to beat off great pain and suffering.  They don't fight fair.  Pain and suffering are sneaky and manipulative.

BUT there will be many who who will beat them off and make their way to resiliency.   It is their presence and example that will give others unconscious permission to do the same.  They will remind us that it is in all of us...

"Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our greatest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be brilliant, talented, fabulous?" Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing  enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us, it's in all of us. As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." Marianne Williamson

Volunteer This Weekend!!

"Many of the groups who once had an abundance of people giving of their time are now struggling to find volunteers."

So it has been 32 days since Sandy devastated the tri-state area.  Shopping for the holidays has begun, and Christmas decorations have started adorning houses.   Life has returned to normal for so many and we are thankful for that!  Lights have been turned on and gas is available.   The commute has returned to normal ...  well relatively!

Unfortunately so many people have not had their lives return to normal...  So much still needs to be done.  Please consider volunteering this weekend.  Many of the groups who once had an abundance of people giving of their time are now struggling to find volunteers.

Here is a list of wonderful organizations who have not stopped serving their communities!  Please remember to add to the comments any organizations that you know need volunteers... Thank you!!!

This is a SHORT list of volunteer opps... PLEASE PLEASE see "The List" where you will be able to find many many MANY more opportunities volunteer!

Many thanks for all who continue to share their time and energy...

Union Beach Hub @ the Union Hose "Firehouse Grille"
1224 Florence Ave Union Beach, NJ 07735
Updated today 1pm

Details: NEEDS/REQUESTS: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Muck-out volunteers - please come with muck-out supplies, if possible (OSHA N95/N92 face-masks, waterproof boots, waterproof work-gloves, hazmat suits (or at the very least heavy-duty work clothes you can throw away; and clean clothes, of course), tarps, garbage bags, crow-bars, headlamps, batteries). Kitchen volunteers - nespecially in morning, to prepare food for regional distribution, for volunteers, and for residents. More needed on weekends. Long-term volunteers are invited to camp at this hub, which is run by the Rainbow Superstorm Sandy Response. Please be respectful of the norms of the camp. Be sure to bring very warm clothes, as this is a cold, windy, wet, coastal spot. Bring your own tents and sleeping bags. This camp is located at the site of Union Hose Fire Company #1, at the invitation of the firehouse, so there should be no problems from local authorities. The camp is providing a vital service to the local community without taxing limited local resources. SUPPLIES NEEDED: OSHA N95/N92 face-masks, waterproof boots, waterproof work-gloves, hazmat suits, heavy-duty work clothes, tarps, waterproof plastic bins, crow-bars, headlamps, batteries, garbage bags. Food is always welcome (extra can be sent to other parts of the state), though the camp is incredibly well supplied. If you plan to bring or send tons of stuff, check in with the P.O.C. on the ground first to ensure they have capacity to receive it.

The People Who Were Killed By Hurricane Sandy

The People Who Were Killed By Hurricane Sandy

Like everybody else, I try so hard to navigate through that feeling.  You know, the uneasy, eery feeling of disbelief.  The slow moving 'am I seeing what I think I'm seeing right now' feeling.  The detached, 'is this a movie' sensation that quiets your thoughts right before the s*** hits the fan.  I found myself glued to the TV on Monday October 29th.  My brain was in a contorted advanced yoga pose as I watched the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel fill up with water like a toy being slowly submerged into a full bathtub.  Then I started reading posts on The New York City Firefighters Brotherhood Foundation facebook page.  There were calls for backup because a firehouse was flooding and the members were struggling to get out.  Then came the announcement that Breezy Point was on fire ... life over property was the next post.  Then all of lower Manhattan went dark as the streets filled with water.  Every story, every post, and every picture dragged me further and further from the safety of my pre-hurricane world.

I had the "best" seat in the house and I watched nothing but Sandy coverage and read nothing but Sandy tweets until the power went out.  You would think that would be enough?  But still, I needed to drive through the streets of Midland Beach before I really knew what had happened.  Then and only then did the details come into focus.  I slowed my car, mouth open shaking my head.  Streets were littered with cars and boats; there were hundreds of people standing
outside of gutted homes whose contents looked as if they had been vomited out onto the street. They were all struggling with THAT feeling.  It wasn't until I saw it that it became real.  And the reality is, Sandy wound up and then gave us a shot to the gut that brought us to our knees, gasping for air.

We know that the coastline surrounding the tri-state area has been devastated.  We know that it is going to take many neighborhoods years to recover, if ever.  We also know that over 100 people lost their lives to this natural disaster...  Over 100 people.  Do we know that? Really? Or do we just have that information?  Whitney Hess, wants us to really know.  To the best of her ability she created a list with the names and the stories of each of Sandy's victims.

Just as I had to drive through the decimated streets of Staten Island before I really understood the storm's full impact, I had to read about each and every individual that died in the path of Sandy before I really knew.  I know now.  My heart sinks for each family member and friend of those that were lost.  I am again humbled as I slow down, mouth open shaking my head ...

What do you do with "failure"??

What do you do with "failure"??

I wrote this a while ago in my music blog but I think it belongs here - It Is In All Of Us,  because this is what we mean when we say that ...

"Failure propels you toward success. If you let it, that is." ~Angela Jia Kim

Simply changing the way you perceive things in your life may appear to be a passive and maybe even silly approach to actually changing your life.  How can merely thinking differently CHANGE anything??

Let's look at the perception of "failure".

If something happens differently then you planned or wanted and you respond in a defeated manner you will be, well, defeated.  You see, If the belief that you are good enough, talented enough, smart enough, or meant to do great things lies precariously in the hands of external events/result/opinions, then if things don't "go your way" you will will recoil into the perception that you failed.  You may even caboose onto that the thought, "how could I have been SO Stupid"!.  If you perceive "failure" in that way you are likely to abandon the goal all together.

Now what would happen if these "unwanted" results were perceived and acted upon as learning experiences?? What would happen if you possessed intrinsic belief in your goals and that belief could not be swayed by the outcome of external events??  What would your life be like if you took up a "back to the drawing board mentality" instead of a "throw in the towel" mentality?  How would you feel if you could think of a "failure" as merely a bend in the road instead of a dead end??  I bet things would be different....

~Michelle Cleary
